Good to know

Baccarat is as easy as heads or tails. Before playing Bacarat, you might benefit from learning about certain notions of the game. These helpful tips and basic rules will give you a sense of what to expect before you get to the casino. Once you are at the table, don’t hesitate to ask the dealer any questions you may have. Helping you understand how the game is played is part of their job.

Taking a seat at the table

Baccarat tables can be easily identified by their red playing surface.

First, find a spot that isn’t already occupied. A special marker is used to indicate spots reserved for players who have temporarily left the table. These spots may be used until the absent player returns.

The initial bet

Place your money on the table. Never hand it to the dealer. The dealer will exchange your money for value chips and you may place your bet in the betting spot indicated on the table before the first card is dealt.

You must respect the minimum and maximum limits indicated at the table when placing your bets.

You may bet on the Player hand (Joueur) or on the Banker hand (Banque). Players betting on the Banker hand must add a commission equal to 5% of their bet in the designated spot. You may also bet on a tie (Égalité).

The cards

Face cards and tens count as 0, Aces count as 1 and all other cards are counted at face value. The value of each hand is the last digit of the sum of the cards.

For example: 10 + 4 + 9 = 13. The value of this hand is 3.

The game

With each hand being dealt, the first and third cards dealt from the shoe make up the Player hand, and the second and fourth cards, the Banker hand. Once the cards are distributed, the dealer announces the point count for each hand.

If the total of one of the two hands, each made up of two cards, is 8 or 9, the hand is called a Natural, and no other cards are dealt for the Player hand or the Banker hand. Otherwise, a third card may be drawn, as the case may be, for the Player hand or the Banker hand (tableau en PDF)

Some games enable you to place additional bets. Ask the dealer about your options.

Game history display

The results of prior games are displayed above the tables to enable Baccarat fans to follow the rhythm of the day’s game.

Winning and losing bets

Winning bets

  • a bet on the Player hand (Joueur) wins if the total value of the Player hand is higher than that of the Banker hand.
  • a bet on the Banker hand (Banque) wins if the total value of the Banker hand is higher than that of the Player hand.
  • a bet on a tie (Égalité) wins if the total value of the Player hand is equal to that of the Banker hand.

Losing bets

  • a bet on the Player hand (Joueur) loses if the total value of the Player hand is lower than that of the Banker hand.
  • a bet on the Banker hand (Banque) loses if the total value of the Banker hand is lower than that of the Player hand.
  • a bet on a tie (Égalité) loses if the total value of the Player hand is different to that of the Banker hand.

Special cases

  • When a bet on the Banker hand is a winner, the 5% commission on the amount of the bet is collected. If the bet is not a multiple of 10, the commission is calculated based on the next higher multiple of 10.
  •  In the case of a tie, the bets on both the Player hand and the Banker hand are a push; they neither win nor lose.
